Welcome Back! I hope everyone had an amazing track out and is looking forward to a great second quarter!
Our Week at a Glance EL - Before track out, students read about a famous poet, William Carlos Williams. They began thinking about what inspired him to write. Soon they will study an assigned poet and write a four-paragraph essay about what inspired their poet to write poetry.
Math - Click here for parent math resource Students will continue Unit 3, Place Value Strategies to Add and Subtract Whole Numbers. This week's Learning Outcomes 1. Students will use place value language to read and write multi-digit numbers (numerals, number names, and expanded form).
2. Students will use correct place value language to name large numbers (up to 100,000).
3. Students will use compare two numbers (up to 100,000) based on the values of digits using symbols <, >, =. 4. Students will demonstrate place value reasoning(rate of ten) when solving a problem.
Important Vocabulary words are place, value, digit, ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, ten times, unit, base ten system, expanded form, compare
Science - Students will begin studying the history/culture of North Carolina. "I Can" statements 4.H.1.2 - I can explain how and why North Carolina was established. 4.C.1.1 - I can explain how people, events and developments brought about changes to communities in various regions of N.C.. 4.H.2.1 - I can explain why important buildings, statues, monuments, and place names are associated with the state's history.

MCNEILL's Messages September 21, 2020
Dear Parents, The students did a stellar job on their Social Studies Performance Task and Math project. I am so proud of them! Thanks for the supportive role that you played in their 1st fourth grade project.
Our Week at a Glance EL - In Unit 2, students continue thinking about what inspires writers to write poetry. In the first half of Unit 2, students finish reading Love That Dog. They think about what inspired the main character, Jack, to write and they collect evidence from his poetry. They are introduced to informative writing and write an informative paragraph for the mid-unit assessment about what inspires Jack.
Math - Click here for parent math resource Students are continuing Unit 2 - Explore Multiplicative Comparison, Area and Perimeter, Factors, and Multiples. This week, students are continuing to explore multiplicative comparison and area and perimeter.
Key vocabulary words for this unit are prime, composite, factor, multiple, factor pair, multiplicative comparison.
Science - Students are learning about Food, Mineral, Vitamins, and Exercise. Their "I Can" statements are: 4.L.2 I can understandfood and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise. 4.L.2.1 I can I classify substances as food or non-food items based on their ability to provide energy and materials for survival, growth, and repair of the body. 4.L.2.2 I can explain the role of vitamins and minerals, and exercise in maintaining a healthy body.
DreamBox - Students are reminded to complete DreamBox lessons daily. Most students completed the required 5 lessons last week. This week students will multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison. Have a Great week, and thanks for all you do! Ms. McNeill

Our Week at a Glance EL - Students will continue Module 1 of EL this week. In Unit 1, students are introduced to poetry through LoveThat Dog, a novel written in verse by Sharon Creech. As Jack, the main character in the novel, reads famous poems, students analyze what is happening in the novel and how Jack feels about it. They also read and analyze famous poems to identify characteristics of poetry and to determine their theme. Our first EL Assessment is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2020.
Math - Students have begun Unit 2 - Explore Multiplicative Comparison, Area and Perimeter, Factors, and Multiples. In this unit, students will expand their understanding of multiplication to include multiplicative comparison. Students will continue to develop the concept of area based on the array model, using that model to explore factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Key vocabulary words for this unit are prime, composite, factor, multiple, factor pair, multiplicative comparison.
Social Studies - Students will continue Unit 1, Geography and Environmental Literacy this week. They will learn about changes that have occurred in North Carolina since its statehood. Students are researching a selected North Carolina region in order to complete a Performance Task.
DreamBox - Students are reminded to complete DreamBox lessons daily. Most students completed the required 5 lessons last week. This week's focus is multiples.
Have a Great week, and thanks for all you do! Ms. McNeill
